About Maria Mann

Maria Mann is a photojournalism consultant and public speaker based in Portugal. She is a motivational photo coach and mentor. She is active in photojournalism education, curating exhibits for institutions and conducting workshops; and is available for consulting in all aspects of the profession, including coaching editors and photojournalists, and newsroom integration. Maria understands that being a photojournalist is a complex, multi-layered undertaking and has the ability to facilitate photographers, photo editors and newsrooms to reach their goals. She worked for European Pressphoto Agency as senior managing editor and director of international reations, from 2007 to 2019. Previously, she was director of global current events at Corbis, Paris, director of photography for Agence France-Presse for the Americas and international photo editor-in-chief in Paris. Maria was director of the IAPA/Knight Foundation Workshops for Advanced Photojournalism, conducting workshops in Latin America. She has taught in Lithuania, World Press in Turkey, Pentagon Military Workshops and China. She was editor of a two-year project on the Ukraine, exhibited at the EU. Maria collaborated with the Newseum, Washington, co-curating several exhibits. She is co-producer of an e-learning module for the Poynter Institute. She co-curated an exhibit for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Geneva. She recently curated a book and exhibit in Portugal on titled 'Estados Desunidos.' She lectures in universities in Europe and the Americas. Maria has judged photojournalism contests including World Press, Unicef, Bayeux War Correspondents, Pictures of the Year, World Press Master Class and Xinhua's CHIPP/China. She was the founding chair of the Best of Photojournalism Contest in the US. She was a member of the Forum: Code de déontologie de la Presse écrite Maghrébine in Tunis, formulating the first code of ethics for the media in the Maghreb region post Arab Spring. She is the recipient of the National Press Photographers’ Joseph Costa Award for ‘leadership and continuing service to photojournalists and photojournalism.’ Maria speaks English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
