About Maria Schuld
Most of my scientific research is driven by the question of how quantum information processing can improve and extend methods in machine learning: How can we efficiently solve pattern recognition tasks on a quantum computer? What machine learning models can we develop from the working principles of quantum devices? Are there applications for near-term quantum technologies? Thinking about quantum machine learning means to explore the borders of what is computable at the intersection of quantum theory, statistics and artificial intelligence. Another passion of mine is the interplay of machine learning and society in South Africa. For example, in the last few years I have been involved in projects where we train language models on South African census, news and Twitter data to investigate social dynamics such as polarisation or violent protest. Vice versa, I want to help strengthening machine learning in South Africa, and since many years I am part of the Deep Learning IndabaX organising team, and served as the local host of the 2019 event.
