About Marie Cavitte

I am a trained glaciologist and geophysicist and climate scientist. With a background in Earth Sciences from Cambridge University (UK) where I specialized in climate sciences and geophysics during my master, I then focused on Antarctic paleoclimate during my PhD at the University of Texas at Austin (UT). In particular, I looked to constrain the paleo-flow history of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet using airborne ice-penetrating radar data combined with ice core data to map the internal stratigraphy of the ice sheet and, using the age structure, feed 1D models to invert for paleo-accumulation rates and constrain the stability of the ice sheet. I was part of the Beyond EPICA Oldest Ice (BE-OI) European Project to find 1.5 million-year-old ice for which I focused on the Dome C region, and worked closely with the BAS and IGE research groups. In parallel to my studies, I always made sure to be active in teaching and/or outreach. I was a teaching assistant for a year at UT (climate sciences and geology for non-majors), I was an expert teacher for two years for the NSF EarthLabs initiative to provide professional development courses to science teachers, particularly focusing on climate sciences, I participated in several open-science days for schools and I was also a Science Olympiad supervisor for four years, developing content for the Dynamic Planet events in Austin and Texas, and a WeGoSTEM volunteer in 2018 in Belgium.
