About Marie Suchan

Learning should be dynamic, playful and grounded in meaningful relevance! As a teacher, I work to stretch my imagination every day to infuse lessons and classroom experiences with student relevant lesson content, an appreciation for the diversity, talents, gifts and experiences that each of my students possesses, knowledge of what skill strands my students need to develop to become more self-sufficient successful writers, to be explicit and direct by using multi-modal communication strategies for all learners (think aloud, explicit modeling, auditory/visual prompts, self-monitoring techniques, work on empathy, etc.) during tasks and to provide enrichment opportunities (trips to museums, the experience of “traveling in time” to appreciate historical fiction, project based learning, etc.) for all. I have been immersed in myriad professional development opportunities and have participated in study groups and focus groups with colleagues in order to my understanding for how to reach and meet all learners. I am a reflective practitioner and am constantly working to build my proverbial bag of tricks to employ with all students. As a motivated special education teacher, I have received effective to employ engaging strategy-based learning and behavioral techniques to enhance the cognitive, social and emotional growth of my students. I use brain-based techniques, social/emotional/ and moral development and creativity in all of my lessons. I can say with confidence that all of my students make gains both statistically and in qualitative ways. My latest foray in professional development has been actualized through my participation in a highly competitive team, the NYC Elementary Science Leadership Team. This group of talented professionals in creating district and school based tools for NYC administrators and teachers to use as we implement the Next Generation Science standards.
