About Marilyn Metta

Marilyn is the Director and Founder of The Metis Centre, a human rights & social justice organisation and consultancy working to promote gender inequality, diversity and inclusion and safety and wellbeing. The Metis Centre uses trauma-informed and integrated care and practice approach and framework. Marilyn has 20 years' experience working as a trauma counsellor and psychotherapist where she incorporates trauma-informed practice, narrative, arts-based and mindfulness-based approaches in her work with individuals, children and families from culturally diverse backgrounds and First Nations families and communities. Marilyn is Senior Lecturer in Anthropology & Sociology and works with the Centre for Human Rights Education at Curtin University. She's a social justice practitioner, educator, researcher and change-maker. Research experience/interests - gender rights and equity, human rights and social justice; Indigenous rights; autoethnography; intimate abuse & coercive control; family violence; refugees and asylum seekers. She's also the Founder and Chairperson of Mettamorphosis Inc, a not-for-profit organisation working to raise funds and awareness to provide access to education for refugee children Her award-winning documentary film, How I Became A Refugee (2014) has been introduced into over 100 schools across Australia. How I Became A Refugee follows the extraordinary journey of a Burmese Chin refugee family from their homeland where they escaped religious persecution from the military government through to Malaysia before being resettled in Perth, Western Australia. How I Became A Refugee (2014) has won three international film awards. The film has been screened internationally in Singapore, Los Angeles, New Zealand, Japan and Canada and nationally in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Marilyn has been awarded the 2021 Westpac Social Change Fellowship for her Feeling Safe and Free initiative. The Feeling Safe and Free project is an innovative community-led initiative that creates safe spaces for young people to engage in conversations about challenging but important issues around sex, sexual harassment, consent, coercive control, intimate abuse, and safe relationships. What’s unique about this project is the use of different creative storytelling tools and media for young people to explore issues that are important to them.
