About Marilyn Sappington

As a relationship-driven fundraising professional with more than 20 years of experience in development, advancement, and business development, I am deeply passionate about connecting people to causes that change lives. I believe that meaningful impact starts with authentic relationships, and I’ve built my career around fostering trust, inspiring generosity, and creating lasting partnerships that support mission-driven work.In my current role as Assistant Director of Leadership & Annual Giving at California State University Channel Islands, I have the privilege of engaging and stewarding leadership-level donors through the President’s Circle and Leadership Annual Giving programs. My work focuses on building genuine connections, strengthening a culture of philanthropy, and aligning donor passions with opportunities that make a real difference for students and the broader community.Previously, as a Major Gifts Officer at Joni and Friends, I managed a portfolio of more than 150 donor relationships, consistently exceeding fundraising goals through thoughtful, donor-centered engagement. I approach fundraising as relational work first—listening, understanding, and walking alongside supporters as they invest in causes they care deeply about. My background in recruitment, business development, and community engagement has further shaped my ability to connect with diverse audiences and build strong, lasting partnerships. Across every role, I’ve remained committed to clear communication, integrity, and creating meaningful experiences that make people feel valued and inspired.I am especially passionate about supporting causes that uplift higher education, children, youth, families, single parents, blended families, and individuals living with disabilities. These aren’t just professional interests—they are personal commitments that fuel the way I show up in my work every day.I thrive in environments where relationships come first, where people feel seen and heard, and where collective efforts lead to lasting impact. I welcome opportunities to connect, collaborate, and continue building relationships that make a difference.
