About Marilynn Nesmith

My internship allowed me to build professional connections with business owners. I practiced professional communication skills by talking to clients, vendors, and co-workers. This experience is the first time I got to spend time with people in a solely work environment. I showed my coworkers I was willing to help and gained their trust. As an intern, I was asked to tackle projects that were outside of my typical duties. I needed to be flexible and be open to wearing multiple hats. By taking on a variety of projects meant I would be working with a variety of different people. It is important to learn how to be adaptable which can open up opportunities for myself, and being flexible with my communication style or way of doing things is essential for success. The second experience is volunteering at a local church, Park Memorial Methodist. It ultimately taught me how to adapt to how the church employees work, as well as gave me insight into the bigger picture of where I’m volunteering at. To my surprise, I was asked to translate for our Spanish speaking church members in multiple settings. I translated video recordings, church services, and phone calls. I had taken the role at Wesleyan being captain of the varsity basketball team. I motivate team members and use coaching skills to encourage the team to work together and towards common goals while considering multiple perspectives. I have also volunteered at the local animal shelter helping the animals and people. I would teach people how to properly care for their new adopted pet and how to continue their training. The skills that I have learned and developed during these experiences have made me become better prepared for my future career.
