About Mario Schmidt

Mario Schmidt is Professor of Environmental Management at the Business School of Pforzheim University and the Director of the Institute of Industrial Ecology (INEC). He studied physics and astronomy at the universities in Freiburg and Heidelberg (Germany). Since 1985, he had worked at IFEU (Institute for Energy and Environmental Research Heidelberg) in the fields of emission control, climate change, environmental management and life cycle assessment. In 1989 and 1990, he joined the Ministry of Environment of the State of Hamburg. Afterwards he built up a department at IFEU, focussed on ecological material flow analyses (MFA) and management systems. He has been at Pforzheim University since He is responsible for numerous studies on behalf of the German Government and many companies. He has written and edited books about material flow analysis and environmental management and was involved in the development of the professional MFA-software Umberto® and e!Sankey®. From 2011 until 2013 he was founder and director of the study program “Business Administration / Resource Efficiency Management” (B. Sc.); In 2014 he set up the study program “Life Cycle & Sustainability” (M. Sc.) at Pforzheim University. In 2015 he was appointed additionally as an honorary professor at Leuphana University in Lueneburg (until 2020). From 2016 until 2020 he has organized the Ph.D-program "Energy Systems & Resource Efficiency" at Pforzheim University in cooperation with KIT Karlsruhe and HfT Stuttgart. In 2012 he was appointed to the Council on Sustainable Development of the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, an important industrial region in Germany.(until 2020). Since 2021 he is member of the Resources Commission at the German Environment Agency (KRU) and since 2022 Co-Chairman of The German Environmental Label Jury (Blue Angel). In 2023 he started a new Ph.D. Programme KLIREC: “Climate, Resources and Circular Economy” in cooperation with KIT Karlsruhe.
