About Maritza Lopez
Maritza Lopez (she/her/Ella) is the Program Director for the Bruin Underground Scholars Program at UCLA. A proud transfer student from Santa Monica College to UCLA, she played an integral role in launching the Bruin Underground Scholars and Bruin McKinney-Vento Initiative in Fall 2019. During her internship at the Bruin Resource Center, Maritza supported programs addressing homelessness, incarceration, and food insecurity in higher education. Her passion for this work is deeply personal, shaped by loved ones with histories of incarceration. This commitment led her to serve as a Community Health Worker and Re-Entry Workforce Navigator in the RISE Department at St. John’s Community Health Clinic in South Los Angeles. Beyond her professional roles, Maritza enjoys visiting museums, cooking, and volunteering at St. Francis Center, where she provides College & Career Readiness programs to youth in the Pico Union neighborhood. She also advocates for incarcerated youth through the Youth Law Center, with a focus on expanding college dual enrollment opportunities for those in juvenile facilities. Now back at UCLA, Maritza is dedicated to supporting Bruin Underground Scholars students to the fullest extent.
