About Mariyan Ivanov

I graduated Law in Sofia University and completed LL.M in International and European Law at the University of Amsterdam. In 2010, I enjoyed the internship in the European Commission where I received face-to-face experience about the working environment of the EU institutions – a fascinating multicultural forum, shaping the EU policies. For more than ten years, I have been working in the Financial Supervision Commission in Bulgaria (FSC) in the International Cooperation Directorate with the main tasks to build and foster on national level the EU internal market for financial services. Since “day one” I have participated in the introduction of the European System of Financial Supervision in 2011. I work with the EU authorities – ESMA and EIOPA, on daily bases through various working groups and common tasks aiming to create supervisory convergence throughout the EU. I possess rich experience in legal drafting through the transposition and application of the new European legislation.Under my supervision and personal involvement, FSC concluded successfully in 2016 the Multilateral Memorandum with the International Association of Insurance Supervisors – IAIS. In the period 2017 – 2020, I took part in the Brexit process, where I was involved in the negotiation process between EU and The United Kingdom, setting the new terms of cooperation. As part of this work, I have participated in the conclusion of several memoranda of understanding with the relevant supervisory authorities in UK. In 2018, I took active part in the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU, where FSC undertook numerous activities together with its European peers. Since 2019, I am engaged in the accession process of Bulgaria to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which is among the main foreign policy priorities of the Republic of Bulgaria. As a coordinator of the accession process on behalf of the FSC, I am a member of the National Coordination Committee, chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and I am monitoring the duties of our teams in the OECD Committees. I am closely working with the European Commission under the initiatives of their Technical Support Instrument. Under my supervision and guidance, FSC is beneficiary of numerous projects, such as: EIOPA Pilot Insurance Training Programme, EU Supervisory Digital Finance Academy, ESG risk management framework for the financial sector etc. I have done lectures for TAIEX project and “Atanas Burov” Foundation.
