About Mark Arnold
My research interests center on the development of sensors for accurate chemical measurements in complex mixtures. One focus is the measurement of glucose in the body for the management of diabetes. Our approach involves passing a band of harmless near infrared light through a fold of skin and determining the concentration of glucose from an analysis of the resulting spectrum. Attractive features of this approach are that it is reagentless, painless, and unaffected by the foreign body response that plagues implantable biosensor for continuous glucose measurements. Time-domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy is also being developed for characterization of new materials and novel analytical applications in gaseous and solid matrixes. Specialties: Near infrared spectroscopy, THz spectroscopy, Multivariate analysis, Noninvasive glucose monitoring, Bioprocess monitoring, and ICU monitoring.
