Hi, I'm Mark. My professional writing career began with an opportunity extended to me by Lisa Barnett, the remarkable Director of Development at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Washington, D.C. Lisa coordinates the fundraising efforts for STRI, whose breadth of scientific educational and research initiatives demands a steady source of funds from a wide array of donors. Communication with these donors, which include individuals; private and public foundations; state, federal, and international governments; and many others, is paramount. I helped write, edit, and coordinate the distribution of information about STRI's programs so that all parties stayed abreast of how their contributions were pushing the boundaries of what we know about our world's biodiversity. From 2007 to 2011, following a move back to my home state of Colorado, I served as the Marketing Editor for the HVS hotel consulting and appraisal offices in Dallas, Atlanta, Boston, Boulder, Mexico City, and Washington, D.C, as well as for all offices of U.S. Hotel Appraisals and U.S. Commercial Appraisals. My duties included writing and editing marketing materials, assisting with the curriculum development and instruction for training sessions on writing, working with appraisal staff to write and revise articles, writing press releases and Web copy, and copyediting hundreds of appraisal reports. As a freelance writer I've contributed copy to campaigns, event promotions, and Web sites for non- and for-profits like Caldera Events Group, The Living Space, Dunn Elementary, Elder Construction, Urban Monk Studios and others. I graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelor's degree in Creative Writing and spent two years in grad studies in English Literature.
