Background

About Mark Caunter

I have always known I wanted to pursue a career in math and science. After discovering my passion and talent for physics and mathematics in high school, I decided to pursue a major in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland. Throughout college I exercised time management and organization skills to successfully balance my academics and extracurricular responsibilities. During my college career I gained real world engineering experience from multiple different projects. These included MATLAB projects focused on data analysis, implementation of algorithms, and statistical methods of product and process development. I also previously contributed to a 9 member team to design, construct and test an autonomous over sand vehicle with terrain mapping capabilities. This process included researching and purchasing sensors, motors and gear boxes which fit budget and vehicle design requirements, developing vehicle parts using Solidworks and 3-D printing, and producing C++ coding to command vehicle functions utilizing an Arduino Microcontroller. Lastly, I led a team of 6 classmates for my Senior Capstone project to design and manufacture a prototype that simplified and expedited the cleaning of kitchen dishes, pots and pan. This gave me crucial leadership experience in successfully advancing through the engineering product development process. After graduating I moved on to a career in systems engineering at Raytheon in Dulles, VA. This role has allowed me to learn from many experienced engineers and grow as an engineer myself. I have had the opportunity to contribute to a team in a quick-paced Sprint environment, while also being relied on to work independently and seek the right support when necessary. Being a mechanical engineering major in a heavily software based program, I came into the role with a background that differed from the SW-centric tasking. This required me to demonstrate the ability to learn quickly and expanded my skillset within my role.
