Background
About Mark Chesser
I have dedicated the past twenty-three years to teaching in various secondary school environments, including traditional and alternative programs. Currently, I hold a full-time teaching position at a secondary school in Burlington, Ontario, after completing a secondment to the Trillium Demonstration School in Milton, Ontario in 2020. My teaching experience includes a variety of roles, such as teaching adults for ten years at the Thomas Merton Continuing Education Centre in Oakville. As a part of the staff there, I was a teacher in the suspended and expelled program for my Board. I have also taught Continuing Education courses for multiple boards as a summer school teacher for twenty-two summers, both online and in-person. In 2013, I served as my board's eLearning teacher, and in 2017, I completed the Additional Qualification "Learning and Teaching through eLearning." Since then, I have incorporated at least one online unit into each of my face-to-face classes, using the Ministry-approved LMS to enhance learning and help students stay relevant in a constantly changing world. In 2020, 2021 and 2022 I was again hired to teach online summer school with the Peel District School Board, in addition to continuing my full-time position in Halton. In 2023, I was again hired by the Peel District School Board to teach a credit course remotely. I hold an Honours Specialist in English and Special Education and have taken AQ courses in Religion, English, and Learning and Teaching through eLearning. My experience teaching a variety of courses in English and Religion, as well as Designing Your Future, the Literacy Course, Topics in Literature, Civics/Careers course, and Health for Life a Physical Education course. My education has qualified me to teach in the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Divisions. As an eLearning teacher, I have also taught numerous courses online. In addition to my teaching career, I have held leadership positions on the Board of Directors of the Niagara Rugby Union, an organization I worked with for fifteen years. Concurrently I was the Games Chair on the Board for the Burlington Rugby Club for several years. These roles gave me valuable insight into board member roles and responsibilities and taught me how to run a volunteer board. In 2019, I completed American Sign Language 101 with the Canadian Hearing Society and still aspire to incorporate those skills into my future teaching endeavours. I am certified in Standard First Aid, Health and Workplace Safety, and ASIST Suicide Prevention Program.
