One of the most rewarding things you can do is to design a building that has a soul,“ says the man formerly charged with sealing and selling the Woodhead name from the Gold Coast to the airports and resorts of northern Queensland. It’s a starting point that has remained absolute across the enormous sprawl of project type, location and innovation that have come with Mark Clements’ during his more than 20 years with Woodhead. Every project has to matter. Southern Cross University, a major client since 2008, mirrors much of the Brisbane principal’s thinking behind the living and breathing project ideal. Places and spaces though, are just one string to his bow. After a degree in architecture from the University of Queensland three years experience in the Solomon Islands and in the Darwin Woodhead office, Mark’s education portfolio grew nationally with work in Cairns, and internationally too with a major international school in Ho Chi Minh City and a literal start up with the Lutheran Church Association in Papua New Guinea. The different project sectors though are many. Aviation work has always shone on Mark’s radar with airports in Cairns (a significant $60M project) plus Darwin, Nhulunbuy, Fraser Coast, the Sunshine and Gold Coast airports. Residential work has kept pace with Gold Coast and Fraser Coast apartments just some of Woodhead’s many Queensland award winning designs and constructions. Tourist resorts in north Queensland have long been a creative and enjoyable staple says Mark, and an opportunity to give free rein to your imagination and ideals, with the Coconut Beach resort in Cape Tribulation one of the first truly sustainable projects of its ilk. Closer to home, and the 40 strong Woodhead office in Brisbane has been a full working life for the Principal who also led the technology group for Woodhead, where he was an influential voice though his work with BIM for example. “Mark is technically very good indeed,” say his Woodhead counterparts.
