About Mark Cleveland

Mark Cleveland (PhD, MSc, BComm) is the Dancap Chair in Consumer Behavior, Full Professor of Marketing, and a former Western Faculty Scholar, Dan Management & Organizational Studies (Department) at the University of Western Ontario. He is the former Director of Western's Collaborative Graduate Program in Migration and Ethnic Relations. Dr. Cleveland has also taught at the John Molson School of Business, HEC-Montréal, and Kedge Business School (Marseille). He has published 50 academic journal articles, two books, and 12 book chapters. He has nearly citations (Google Scholar). Dr. Cleveland’s research also includes more than 50 papers presented at conferences spanning 5 continents. He has conducted research on consumers living 22 countries, including Canada, the United States, Mexico, Chile, United Kingdom, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Greece, India, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Iran, Lebanon, and Turkey. Since 2013, Mark has been an Associate Editor for the International Marketing Review, and he is on the board of several prominent academic journals. His numerous awards include: Western Faculty Scholar (2017-2019), Hans B. Thorelli Award (American Marketing Association), Benjamin Franklin Parr Fellowship, Dancap Private Equity Faculty Fellowship, William Darden Award-Best Research Methodology Paper, Joe Kelly Graduate Award (best thesis/dissertation), Best Paper Award-International Journal of Advertising, Emerald Literati Network Award of Excellence, Emerald Highly Commended Paper Award (x2). His work has featured in prominent media including The New York Times, Forbes, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Financial Post, La Presse, Le Soleil, Le Devoir, Psychology Today, Toronto Sun, MSN.com, BNNBloomberg, CTV news, Global News, and CBC’s Marketplace, among many other media outlets. He has served as a consultant for numerous organizations, including McKinsey and Co, McCann Worldgroup, and Industry Canada. Specialties: Dr. Cleveland's research is interdisciplinary, and focuses on cross-cultural consumer behavior, globalization and culture, social identity and culture change, mixed ethnicity, culture and decision-making, culture in consumption, social media and psychological well-being, services marketing, green marketing, gift-giving, advertising, branding, consumer dispositions, psychometrics and market segmentation.
