Background
About Mark Dummett
Experienced research manager, researcher, human rights campaigner, and a former, award-winning BBC News correspondent. I am currently on sabbatical from my role as head of the Business and Human Rights team at Amnesty International's International Secretariat, in which I oversee ten researchers, campaigners, advocates and policy experts, and lead on Amnesty's work to hold companies accountable for their involvement in human rights abuses. These have included projects focussing on oil and gas companies in Nigeria, cobalt and copper mining in the DRC, companies owned or supplying the Myanmar military, and business supporting illegal Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. I was previously the interim director of Amnesty's Global Issues Programme, leading teams working on Business, Security and Human Rights; Economic and Social Justice; Gender, Sexuality and Identity; and Refugees and Migrants Rights. In this role I oversaw the development of each team’s new multi-year strategy, and from late 2021, managed the restructuring of the programme, creating new teams on Climate Justice and Racial Justice, to strengthen Amnesty’s focus on these two areas. I oversaw Amnesty’s priority campaign on access to Covid-19 vaccines. I've researched, written and edited numerous reports for Amnesty, and before that for Human Rights Watch. I've a track record of using innovative research techniques to understand harmful corporate operations, and of working in partnership with colleagues from other organisations. I'm a regular spokesperson for Amnesty and have appeared in many TV and radio interviews, as well as documentaries and at public speaking events. I'm also a former BBC producer and news correspondent, covering Africa and then South Asia, appearing across the BBC's global TV and radio programmes and website. My journalism has also been published by the Economist, Reuters, CNN and other media outlets. In 2008, I was part of a BBC team that won a Sony gold award for multiplatform radio.
