My professional passion is helping manufacturers improve productivity and eliminate waste in the pursuit of zero losses (value added focus). From my early career days measuring line/operations performance on paper and writing/completing capital improvement projects as a manufacturing engineer the passion evolved deliberately to incorporate digital tools and incorporate software solutions enlaced with standard work process coaching, change management principles, and reliable/relevant data acquisition. My career change from manufacturing to software (manufacturing shop floor machine integration solutions) was strategic to help expand my technology skillsets and to create the opportunity to assist/coach multiple manufacturers across a variety of industries. I have been lucky enough to provide external consulting and digital/software solutions design guidance at over 70 manufacturing sites, often for Fortune 500 companies. One software pre-implementation process I developed (“IMPACT Vertical Implementation” or VI) that was modeled after TPM’s Early Equipment Management pillar helped expedite time to value at software go-live vs. the traditional change curve (dip before gain). A case study of 6 new plant software deployments; 4 using the VI process and 2 who chose not to, found that the 4 sites that used the VI process realized an average operator engagement metric at 98% vs. 37% for the non-VI sites. Further, another critical metric measures the use of the software collected data in productivity review meetings. The 4 sites that deployed with VI immediately used the software/digital data in their shift/daily productivity meetings while the 2 other non-VI sites did not, thus reducing time to value. One case study plant manager remarked “The pre-implementation approach was a critical step to a successful implementation. It’s the catalyst to intelligently equip your team to understand the right way to use the system.” This same process served as my ASQ Six Sigma Black Belt certification project.
