20 years ago, I left the corporate world to see if I could have crack at this new online thing called 'ecommerce'. Today, our ecommerce clients generate over $/£ worth of annual revenue in aggregate. How did I manage this? Three reasons: First, I’m a data geek and I benchmarked all the ecommerce businesses I had access to in Google Analytics (approx. Why did some grow, why did some fail? I found out silly things like ‘don’t have men looking direct at the camera (but women ok)’, ‘what the best proceed to checkout text is’ & ‘what checkouts work best for first time customers’ – (100s of split tests - I should write a book!) Third, I found that all ecommerce sites have a segment of visitors that ‘almost buy’ but don’t. Those annoying people that abandon without buying? Well these are the best place to gain sales if you are in a hurry. People have grown ecommerce businesses bigger than yours. Most of my success was asking someone bigger how they did it. Never did I recreate the wheel, I just found out the next step and did that. Are you trying to ‘do it on your own’ pretending that no-one has ever run a business like yours before? Are you too addicted to the entrepreneurial fight? The truth is that if you not talking to someone who is already where you want to be next, then you are limiting your income, freedom and potential.
