About Mark Hiraoka

A review of my curricula vitae will demonstrate that have spent my entire academic career with the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. As my time as obstetrics and gynecology clerkship director and obstetrics and gynecology residency program director, I have served many positions within JABSOM from co-chair of the third-year student education committee to a current member of the UH GMEC Executive sub-committee. I believe that this breathe of experiences gives me working knowledge of both undergraduate medical education and graduate medical education at JABSOM and in the various clinical learning environments that JABSOM learners are stationed. I have been a full-time obstetrician gynecologist and my clinical activities have been primarily on the labor and delivery unit, at Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Clinic (a large FQHC)) and performing consultive gynecologic ultrasound for the hospital. While I have been clinically active, I have also been in charge of running either the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship or residency program. This has given me the unique opportunity to administer and design improvements to not only the educational curricula but also the clinical learning environment at various sites. I have had the opportunity to work with hospital administration as well as staff members in various taskforces and quality initiatives. I have garnered a valuable perspective of how medical education occurs in various clinical sites.
