The Will to Win. When we are confident in our ability, we have focus and the courage to take on challenges. The trust we place in ourselves allows us to raise the bar each day. But when our mind expects us to always outperform the previous day by simply doing the work then we have a problem. Because of those expectations we shift from the present to the future, which forces us to make judgements on the outcome. If we fail to achieve those expectations, then we lose confidence in our ability. That puts us on that dangerous slope of balancing confidence with expectations. For over 40 years, I have coached Leaders how to balance the two. To appreciate that we are more than our performance. We are more than a one-time win. Each day is a new challenge, a new mountain to climb, a new goal to achieve. Sometimes success will pass us by. Vince Lombardi is famous for saying "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." Yet on many occasions he would remind the team that the will to win far outweighs the outcome. My years in wealth management, four as an advisor with EFHutton, 38 years in the field as a manager, complex manager, division manager and 7 years as a performance coach has allowed me to help advisors and managers find their will to win. After decades on the "street", I felt a responsibility to give back a little of what I received. I joined my colleagues at TPG to help develop the new leaders of wealth management and become a creative disruptive force in the industry. My objective is to make financial services a better more fun place to work. Leadership is an elusive concept, hard to describe and impossible to prescribe. It is more evident in its absence so that when leadership is needed, its lack is sorely felt. This is why I do what I do.
