Educator, Researcher, Communicator Chemistry Professor working at the interface of synthesis, catalysis, medicinal and agrochemical research. More than 200 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and hundreds of undergraduate and visiting students have conducted research in the Lautens Group over a 35 year period. These trainees now hold positions in academia, the pharmaceutical and agrochemical sector, and allied industries. Areas of research include the synthesis of complex organic molecules of interest to the pharmaceutical industry. Discovery of new chemical reactions and applications to natural product synthesis. New synthetic methods, catalysts and enantioselective processes. Consultant for medicinal chemistry, process chemistry and drug discovery units of pharmaceutical companies, contract research companies and biopharmaceutical companies. Experience with evaluation of patents and intellectual property litigation. Member of Governing Council, Executive Committee, Academic Board, Planning & Budget, Academic Board. Member of Senate at Trinity College University. Volunteer Presiding Officer Citizenship Ceremonies, IRCC. OpEd contributor to the Globe & Mail, Toronto Star and Hill Times. Topics include science, research funding, supporting early career researchers, improving support for graduate students, citizenship and teaching experiences.
