Background
About Mark Long
After graduating, I initially worked on embedded systems and compilers - I was always comfortable with low level programming. After that, I moved to applications programming, developing everything from time card systems to stock exchange applications working in Pascal, C++ and Visual Basic. In 1995, I moved to Microsoft as a support technician but rapidly moved to Critical Problem resolution which is part of the hotfix process, mainly involved in deep dive debugging. After many years working with customer projects that were failing and Microsoft's own developers, I moved to a security specialisation. While working in Security, I specialised in malware and hacks against IIS based systems and developed training on malware, rootkits, reverse engineering and social engineering. I left Microsoft in 2008 and worked as a consultant for a short time. In January of 2009, I joined Research in Motion as a security response manager. My day to day work includes finding vulnerabilities in code, working with researchers, reproducing issues that have a security impact, preparing security advisories and performing triage on closed and open source issues. My work involves both ARM and x86 devices and 3 unrelated operating systems, I also work as a volunteer for Saint John Ambulance providing first aid and emergency treatment. I recently published my first full length book: Z-DAY UK, A practical guide to surviving the Zombie Apocalypse in the UK, available as a print book or for Kindle. Your money back if it does not help you to survive the Zombie Apocalypse. Specialties: Debugging Analysis of systems for weaknesses, bugs and performance bottlenecks Reverse engineering of malware.
