About Mark Loveday

With over three decades of experience in the aerospace and technology sectors, I have cultivated a deep expertise in ground control systems management. Beginning my journey with a four-year apprenticeship in electronics for the Royal Aerospace Establishment, I continued to pursue higher education, completing my BEng in Electronic engineering. My career then led me to Germany in 2002, where I served as a mission control software support engineer, providing invaluable contributions to missions such as ERS-2 and XMM-Newton. Returning to the UK in 2007, I played a pivotal role in the Galileo programme, serving as the subject matter expert on the mission control software. Subsequently, I transitioned into the realm of security systems development for a next-generation ISP, where I ensured compliance with UK regulatory standards as part of the Public Compliance Team. My passion for mission-critical operations drew me back to Germany in 2011, where I contributed to the Galileo and Metop-B LEOP Flight Operations Teams, specializing in mission control software support. In 2013, I assumed the role of GIMUS MCS Domain Manager, overseeing a team tasked with delivering ITIL services for all ESOC satellite missions. In 2014, I joined the ERSIN Earth Observation Payload Data Ground Segment project as a security engineer, leveraging my expertise in security software, policy, and standards, along with my knowledge of the ECSS software engineering standard. Since 2015, I have served as the Ground Control Systems Manager, leading a team of engineers responsible for maintaining and developing ground control systems for a fleet of four geostationary high-throughput Ka-band spacecraft. Notably, in my current role, I initiated and led the apprentice programme within the Spacecraft Operation Team, which has successfully seen three apprentices complete their training, contributing to the development of future talent in the field. As a leader, I am committed to fostering innovation, driving operational excellence, and ensuring the seamless functioning of critical infrastructure in the aerospace domain. I am passionate about leveraging technology to solve complex challenges and look forward to continuing to make meaningful contributions to the field.
