About Mark Mercer

With over 19 years of experience in the electrical power industry, I am a senior leader with a passion for delivering safe, reliable, and customer-focused network operations. I have a master's degree in business administration and a master's degree in electrical and electronics engineering, which enable me to combine technical knowledge, strategic thinking, and business acumen. I am committed to driving innovation, continuous improvement, and operational excellence in my current role as the Power Network Management Hub Senior Leader at Electricity North West (ENWL). As the Power Network Management Hub Senior Leader, I lead the strategic management of ENWL network control room operations, responsible for the electrical power network for 2.4 million customers. I develop and influence reliability and customer strategies with the senior and exec teams and translate them into operational practice. I also prepare and lead the company response on storms and continuous operational response adaptation to increasingly adverse weather. I have implemented and embedded a highly advanced control room management system and established governance and reporting of all reliability regulatory reports to Ofgem. I leverage my skills in Kanban, Lean Six Sigma, and JIT Production to optimize the performance and efficiency of the network operations. I have also collaborated with Birmingham University to publish a research paper on the operational understanding and preparation for extreme wind events.
