Endless Learning Landscape: Digital venues continue to provide an endless landscape for breaking out of the traditional classroom. Access to these tools enables students to create on a canvas that is virtually unlimited. I am not afraid to have students – as digital natives – shape their learning landscape to match their passion. Applying these tools and new methods to client-based or personal projects provides a dynamic, collaborative experience with real-world, real-time applications. Often these lead to internships that transform into careers. A Third, A Third, A Third: My expectation is for students to spend one third of their time reading, researching and discussing a topic, one third participating in or shadowing a demonstration on the topic, and one third creating or producing something that allows them to apply what they have learned. When beginning mastery is attained, the process begins again, either with a new skill or a new concept, or as a way of taking an emerging skill or thought to a higher level. Vocational Discernment: The constant feedback students receive through my personal review of their Podcasts (radio), productions (TV/Film I), or practicum assignments helps them discern if their abilities are suited for a career in communications. My hope is that students — through trial and error — will learn to match their interests and abilities to a specific area of communication, or discover their vocational calling in a field where strong communications skills will serve them well.
