About Mark Perner

For the past 35 years, I've been a sports journalist, serving as a writer, copy editor and layout editor. In my 7-plus years at the Philadelphia Daily News and Philadelphia Inquirer, I have proven my versatility by being a copy editor, writer, slot person, scoreboard page coordinator and a contributor to High & Inside. I produced a 38-part series on the history of the Philadelphia 76ers, which received rave reviews. In my 19 years as a Copy Editor at The Morning Call, I was responsible for supervising the editing process of 13 Morning Call Sports Writers who were under tight deadlines, which was challenging and exciting. I was consistently involved in the creative process, whether I worked with a writer to come up with a snappy lead or with the Photo and Art Departments to come up with a captivating front page. Throughout my years in the newspaper business, I enjoyed collaborating with interns as well as new and seasoned professionals. I was able to successfully manage the editorial process for this group of professionals to ensure the creation of an accurate and creative product. I effectively produced special sections focused on the U.S. Senior Open; the Winter Olympics; high school, pro and college football; the Phillies and weekly high school sports by collaborating with other departments from start to finish and met all necessary deadlines. I am known to take intelligent risks and have the best interest of the customer at heart. I possess sound news judgment and have no hesitancy when it comes to tackling issues and problems with reporters in the editing process. I was looked upon as "a leader in the design and content of the sports section" and had a "great impact on the (copy) desk's accuracy rate and ability to meet deadlines."
