About Mark Purkis

Wastewater is a topic most people want to be kept out of mind, out of sight, and out of smell. This has led to chronic underinvestment over decades in critical infrastructure, leading to enormous volumes of untreated sewage in our waterways. But this doesn’t need to be the case, wastewater is an enormous unexploited renewable source of energy and nutrients that today is treated as an expensive environmental problem. This is where I, and renasys, come into the picture. As a Brit who has lived and worked in Norway since 2019, I have become fluent in Norwegian and built a unique network within wastewater, sustainability, and energy. My personal sustainability journey began with a workshop on “Sustainable Business Models” in Bergen in 2020. This led me to taking a 3-month course in Sustainable Business Management. Soon after the course ended, I came into contact with renasys and was blown away by the company’s mission. There was no way I could turn down this opportunity. I have a few hats in renasys: Customer contact, business analyst and a part of the on-call maintenance team. This gives me a comprehensive insight into our solution and business proposition. This role combines my engineering and sustainability knowledge, with story-telling and networking. I understand the technicalities and communicate them effectively. With the help of our prototype, our first customer – Sunnfjord Municipality, Førde, achieved environmental compliance for the first time since 2013, and has avoided a 50 % expansion which has: Saved inhabitants 258MNOK through to 2040; Prevented the increased energy demand.
