Background
About Mark Rosen
I am proud that I spent the majority of my urology career practicing urology for the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF). I have experience in all types of medical practice, including academic medicine, private practice, and a staff model HMO before joining PAMF. Over the past 35 years I have developed expertise in evaluation and treatment of urinary symptoms in men. I have also led the adoption of minimally-invasive treatment of localized prostate cancer in our medical group. I was an early adopter of the minimally-invasive treatment for benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) called UroLift, and started using this technology in early 2017. I have done over 500 cases since then with results that match the published data from centers of excellence around the world. I have learned over the past 3 decades that it is essential to understand men's urinary symptoms and their goals for treatment. I have also learned that it is essential to understand each man's urinary function and the potential causes of their symptoms, so treatment is individualized and gives each man the best chance for the most symptom improvement. I was also an early adopter of minimally invasive treatments for localized prostate cancer, known as focal therapy or partial gland ablation. I have trained and had experience with a number of technologies for prostate cancer focal therapy, including irreversible electroporation (IRE), cryoablation, and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). I am an active member of the Focal Therapy Society, a worldwide organization of urologists who provide this leading-edge treatment for men with localized prostate cancer. I have had professional leadership experience in our large multi-specialty medical group as the director of the Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group (PAFMG) Surgical Specialty Service Line from 2017-2022, and before that as the Urology Department Chair from 2014-2017. I currently am a member of the Sutter Health Genitourinary Program of Distinction (GU-POD) committee, which works to spread leading-edge care for GU cancers across the Sutter Health geography. I have been a leader in the adoption of other new technologies and surgical techniques, including prostate MRI and fusion biopsy, transperineal prostate biopsy, da Vinci robot-assisted urologic surgery, minimally invasive treatments for prostate enlargement (UroLift, iTind, Optimum DCB, and others), prostate cancer brachytherapy, and others. I think that my experience in Urology can be valuable to other urologists who are interested in adoption of these cutting edge technologies.
