About Mark Ryan

I am a Research Assistant, tutor, and lecturer at the University of Limerick, Ireland, where I am the recipient of a scholarship from the School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics. I hold a Ph.D in Applied Linguistics and specialise in the discourses and representations of gender- and sexual-minorities in the Irish context, and particularly in the linguistic and semiotic processes involved in the formation of such identities. I am also interested in queer futurity, temporalities, and spatialities.I won the University of Limerick’s Thesis-in-Three competition in 2022 for my presentation of this research and went on to represent the university in the international quarterfinals. I also have a keen interest in the internationalisation of higher education, both at a theoretical and policy level, and aim to integrate my expertise in equality, diversity and, inclusion into this field. I have spoken about my research at international conferences at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Helsinki as well as at events closer to home.I am committed to improving LGBTQI+ experiences in particular, and have also worked at the Directorate of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at Technological University Dublin, where I held a post as Senior Research Assistant. My most recent publication is a co-authored study on gender and public policy during the COVID-19 pandemic which examines how various social factors intersected to aggravate inequalities in Ireland during the pandemic.
