About Mark Sutherland

I am a Policy Analyst with Northern Airports & Marine Operations, a branch within the Department of Transportation & Infrastructure. We are responsible for maintaining and operating airports and ferries in remote communities in northern Manitoba (most people don't know we even have ferries in Manitoba!), and my current role is in ensuring our airports, vessels, and operations remain compliant with federal regulations and standards. Previous role was in Occupational Health & Safety. I am grateful for the opportunity to see much of the north, experience what it’s like in communities I’d previously only ever heard of. Almost all of the communities we serve are on-reserve, and most are only reachable via airplane, ferry, or winter road. I am bilingual, having lived in Quebec previously. I have a B.Sc. in Biosystems Engineering, where my studies were focused on assistive technology for individuals with handicaps. EIT, working towards my P.Eng. Interests are in environmental, ergonomics, assistive technology/accessible design, biomedical engineering, occupational hygiene, transportation, and urban/regional planning (have taken several courses for personal interest after graduation).
