About Mark Thompson
Mr. Thompson is an ecologist and project manager with EcoLogic Consultants Ltd. He is also an adjunct faculty member with the UNBC Ecosystem Science and Management Program. He specializes in herpetology and is a director with the North West Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (NW PARC). Mark Thompson received his BSc in Wildlife Biology from the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) in 1998. He completed his MSc in Zoology through the University of Calgary in 2003, worked as a geneticist at UNBC from 2004-2012, and then moved onto environmental consulting in 2012. He obtained his RPBio in 2013. His MEd thesis was completed in 2014 through the Multidisciplinary Leadership program at UNBC. His thesis emphasized conservation leadership and psychology as he developed and researched children nature study programs. He has been a member of the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles since 1997 and is also a member of the Canadian Herpetological Society He is past-president of the BC Association of Professional Biology (2017-2019) and of a non-profit conservation charity from 2008-2012, called NAMOS BC (Northern Amphibian Monitoring Outpost Society). The mission of NAMOS BC was to promote education and research into the ecology and conservation of amphibians in northern BC. Mr. Thompson has managed numerous research projects involving amphibians, wetlands, and wildlife generally (e.g, caribou, polar bears, and marmots). He works in both field and office on issues concerning wildlife management in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Mr. Thompson develops research designs, statistical analysis (fluent in r-stats language), and remote sensing (optical and radar) analysis to study ecosystem phenology and classification. He is passionate about conservation science, the philosophy of science, and in communicating on the common links between scientific and Indigenous knowledge in conservation practice.
