About Mark Thomsen

My passion is creating healthcare environments that foster healing. To this end, my healthcare planner role allows me to build positive relationships with each member of the design and build team that are based on trust and performance. When challenges arise, my focus is on the completing a facility that meets and exceeds the design intent within budget. In my spare time, I play jazz in a small group, where performing together is like the design process, we all need to listen to one another to make great music together. Some say the “devil is in the details”, but to me that is the best part of my job. Like playing a melody, it’s important to learn the chord changes so the music sounds effortless. In a similar fashion, focusing on the details ensures the final built environment is both durable and beautiful. This includes everything from doors and hardware to engineering systems to specifications and finishes. Based on my experience I’ve learned that design elements that support healing are single bed rooms for privacy and infection control, clear circulation flow for orientation, access to daylight and views to the exterior, access to green space and noise control. I feel privileged to play a part in the healthcare design and build process with the owner, construction and design team.
