Background
About Marlo Jappen
Originally from Long Island, New York, Marlo Jappen currently serves as an editor at U.S. News & World Report, after spending years working as a researcher at NBCUniversal. Marlo began her professional career at Emerson College in Boston, graduating with a BFA in writing, literature, and publishing, and a minor in marketing communication. She completed a directed study in magazine writing under the supervision of The New York Times Magazine writer Benoit Denizet-Lewis. For this self-created course, Marlo wrote in-depth profiles on local artists—all of whom have faced struggles with mental health—to help humanize the archetype of a "suffering artist." While studying at Emerson College, Marlo was the co-editor-in-chief of a lifestyle magazine called Atlas and an editorial intern at The Improper Bostonian, a bi-weekly magazine where she fact-checked and copyedited articles, transcribed interviews, and wrote entertainment pieces. Additionally, she has contributed to Newsday, Marquis Who’s Who, the Long Island Press, the Long Island Organic, and Anton Community Newspapers. Passionate about writing, reporting, and editing, Marlo hopes to use these skills to achieve her biggest goal: sharing the stories of underrepresented people and communities.
