About Maronel Steyn

My key competencies lie in environmental management and seeking causes or solutions driven to improve the quality of ecosystems and human health, specifically related to water. I have extensive experience in water research that spans not only wastewater but also surface waters, drinking water, and artificial recharge of wastewater. Not only do I focus on the physical, chemical, and microbiological risk factors, but I am also passionate about adopting and implementing a transdisciplinary research approach in the projects I am involved in to ensure that research outputs that are produced are directly relevant and usable for their intended audiences. My work also focuses on decision support systems, both from the evidence-based policy-making position and an acceptable risk management frame of mind. My recent experience focusses more on bioremediation of waste effluents and water reuse as well as phycoremediation of waste effluents. I have done multidisciplinary research fieldwork throughout South Africa, across our borders (e.g, Mozambique, Malawi, Botswana, Namibia, and Mauritius), as well as internationally (e.g, Costa Rica and Vietnam). Specialties: Environmental Health, Microbial water quality analysis, Environmental Epidemiology, Quantitative Risk Assessment, and Stakeholder Engagement.
