About Marshall Yuan

I have been working in the container automation industry since 2008, with a strong focus on advancing robotics and optimisation in terminal operations. My academic background includes a PhD in Robotics, where I specialised in optimisation algorithms for multi-robot systems planning to improve container terminal automation.Since joining Patrick Technology Systems, which was acquired by Kalmar in 2012, I have contributed to the design and development of several core automation modules, including task scheduling, yard management systems for decking, and path planning. My implemented work has been deployed across multiple automated terminals, such as Patrick Autostrad Terminals at Fisherman Island in Brisbane and Port Botany in Sydney, the APM Terminal at Pier 400 in Los Angeles, and the Union Pacific Railroad, playing a key role in driving efficiency and reliability in container terminal operations worldwide.Most recently, I applied my experience to the development and implementation of Kalmar One Decker, a new-generation automation product now running live at Union Pacific (UPRR). This builds on my prior work with Australian decking systems (for Patricks Stevedores), where I gained valuable expertise in delivering scalable, high-performance solutions for complex terminal operations.With over 15 years of experience at the intersection of robotics, optimisation, and automation, I am passionate about shaping the future of container handling by combining academic innovation with practical, real-world solutions.
