Background
About Martha Rummel
My strongest skill is in helping students get from where they are to where they want to be. I have taught high school math and science for 27 years with specific experience in algebra I and II, trig, pre-calculus, chemistry, biology, and physiology. Working one-on-one, I love finding the keys to students' understanding. I've always loved science and majored in biology in undergrad. By the time I was a senior, I was a docent in a natural history museum and had helped many friends improve their grades in biology, chemistry, and math. After graduation from University of Michigan, I continued studying to get my teaching certificate. I moved to Georgia and started teaching in 1986 and haven't looked back, earning my M.Ed. in science from Georgia State. While I enjoy being a classroom teacher, I find the most rewarding part of my work to be one-on-one instruction. I have achieved a lot of success with it. I find that taking the time to listen to a student and then taking the time to make sure that the student understands makes all the difference. I try to find out where a student is: What do you understand and where is it that you get lost? So we start there, using what a student does know in an interactive way, to make that connection. Owning the discovery helps students with their confidence. When it's math, I want to see the student do the work. They can watch me all day and they're not getting anything. I need to see that they can accomplish the task themselves. Learning shouldn't be a chore and I find that understanding the individual needs of a student can make all the difference in his or her love of learning. One size really doesn't fit all when it comes to education.
