About Martin Klein
I taught African history at the University of Toronto for 29 years. I have also taught at Berkeley, Wellesley College, Carleton College, Stanford, Lovanium university in Kinshasa, and the University of Rhode Island. I have written or edited seven books of which the most important were Slavery and Colonial Rule in French West Africa and Islam and Imperialism in Senegal: Sine-Saloum 1847-1914. Most of my research has been on the history of slavery and the slave trade in Africa. My most recent project has been with Sandra Greene and Alice Bellagamba on the collection and publication of African sources for slavery and the slave trade.
