About Martin Madera

I have worked in different industries from e-commerce to applied research, have used different languages and have gained experience with sometimes very different software architectures. I learnt that the most important skills are always communication skills, both with colleagues and with customers. Creating good, maintainable, extendable, usable and sustainable software solutions is first and foremost about good communication. I therefore focus on Software Engineering as a process of creating software solutions from the beginning (understanding users' needs) to successful deployment and maintenance of the software (usable and accessible software solution which helps users to fulfil their tasks efficiently). My focus is not on a specific language or a specific technology stack. These are tools of trade. Have you ever seen a carpenter who uses only a five-pound hammer for both nails and woodscrews because he can't use a screwdriver? Neither have I! I have studied artificial intelligence and machine learning in a Ph.D. programme and have been teaching students to become new software engineers and hopefully my future colleagues. Although learning the theory behind machine learning can be a daunting tasks sometimes, in order to really leverage machine learning to its best potential you have to "see further by standing on the shoulders of giants"(a quote stolen from Sir Isaac Newton).
