About Martin Profant

Hi, I'm currently a second year medical student at the University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine in the MD program. Currently, my research focuses on translational work seeking to characterize biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease using focused ultrasound liquid biopsy (Meng lab Sunnybrook). I am also interested in clinical research related to DBS for MDD, epidemiology of adult medulloblastoma, and spinal cord injury. I was previously an undergraduate researcher in the lab of Dr. Chao Wang at Sunnybrook Research Institute, where I work on elucidating the mechanisms that underlie neuroinflammation and its connection to multiple sclerosis pathogenesis and brain atrophy. My past research experience includes serving as a summer research student in the lab of Dr. Laura Cox at Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School. There I worked on discovering novel mechanisms of how the gut microbiome influences the immune system and its effect on MS disease progression.
