About Marvin Debose

I am a lifelong Philadelphia native and committed library professional with over 20 years of service at the Free Library of Philadelphia, currently serving as Assistant Chief. My journey has spanned roles as Branch Manager and Adult/Teen Librarian, with a strong focus on community engagement, literacy, and youth empowerment. My academic background includes a Bachelor’s in Human Services/Criminal Justice from Springfield College, a Master’s in Library Science from Clarion University, and an Intergenerational Specialist Certification from the University of Pittsburgh. I am passionate about Street Literature and have built and led the Overbrook Park branch’s Urban Fiction collection—the largest in the Free Library system—along with founding the Teen Street Lit Book Club. My commitment to youth development began before librarianship, as co-founder of the Mt. Airy-Germantown Basketball Association. This program combined athletics with a strong emphasis on literacy, character, and educational advancement, helping numerous inner-city students earn college scholarships. I proudly serve on multiple committees and associations, including the Pennsylvania African American Library Association, the ALA’s “In the Margins” Book Review Committee, and the Street Lit Book Award Medal (SLBAM) Committee. I also contribute to the MrPhillyLibrarian blog, where I review books and share thoughts on urban literacy and programming. In addition to my work in libraries, I am a Past Master and Class Instructor for Mt. Olive Lodge #27 (MWPHGL of PA), continuing my commitment to leadership and community service.
