About Mary Ryder

Dr Ryder has spent her career building a reputation characterised by exceptional and sustained leadership in practice, research and education in Advanced Nursing Practice (ANP) nationally and internationally. She was the first Heart Failure Clinical Nurse Specialist and ANP (2003) in Ireland, and the clinical nurse representative on the European Heart Failure board (2005-2010). Mary led the first international comparison of ANP roles in the domains of leadership and research. This work has influenced research, leadership and teaching with and for ANPs internationally. Methodologies she has developed and methods used have been replicated internationally, creating an increasing body of evidence to advance research specific to and for ANPs. With a solution-focused approach to her research, she has worked on developing structures, processes, and frameworks to support the development and integration of ANP roles. Examples include: Developing a capability education framework for ANPs, developing an organisational governance framework for ANPs at St Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH), establishing the first Grand Rounds for ANPs at SVUH, and creating a role differentiator document for ANP/CNS and staff nurse roles at SVUH. In addition to specific research related to ANPs, my expertise in evaluation has been demonstrated in my leadership of large cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional programmes (academic and clinical), through evaluation of nursing programmes (RUN ME project, and as the National Project Lead in NMBI for the development of Undergraduate Nurse Registration Programme Standards. In recognition of her expertise as an ANP in Heart Failure, Dr Ryder was invited by the National Clinical Lead for Cardiology to lead two multidisciplinary national research projects related to the prevention of heart failure among women, funded by the Department of Health She is also a co-applicant on six research projects from the HerHeartbeat research team, who has recently been awarded grants totaling over €1m in this area. Dr Ryder previously led successful grant applications on various projects in Ireland to a total of and as a co-applicant on national and international grants In addition to her methodological expertise, she has demonstrated a strong capacity for governance, strategic planning, and financial oversight of large-scale research projects. Dr Ryder is passionate about fostering a positive and inclusive culture and she has a deep commitment to developing the next generation of impactful clinicians and scholars.
