About Mason Ruby

I am currently in my final year of a PhD in Applied Physics with a concentration in Astrophysics at the University of Memphis. I have worked on projects related to the coevolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies utilizing integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy, narrow-band imaging, and wide-field surveys. In February 2024, I was awarded a 6-month visiting graduate student fellowship at the Caltech Infrared Processing and Analysis Center in which I worked on a project utilizing large-scale surveys, the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database, and machine learning techniques to develop novel methods for active galactic nuclei detection. I also have extensive data science experience gained during a 2-year internship with FedEx in which I worked with petabyte-scale datasets to detect outliers and malicious activities via statistical and machine learning techniques. I have broad interests in various scientific inquiries. I am a quick learner who is able to understand complex scientific concepts and translate them to stakeholders, and I am looking forward to working in a dynamic environment with people from a broad range of backgrounds.
