About Mason Summers

I am interested in deciphering the many intriguing functions of biological systems on the cellular and molecular level and discovering ways we can engineer them or harness their natural abilities to help treat disease. In the Kostyukova lab in WSU's Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering, I study the novel functions of the actin-binding protein leiomodin-2 (Lmod2) in regulating the sarcomere and cardiac muscle contraction. My focus is on deciphering the function of an understudied region of this protein that has implications in cardiac disease. My long-term goal is to become a scientist in the biotechnology industry, working with a team to translate discoveries like those I have worked on in my PhD into novel treatments for disease. I am also part of WSU's NIH Protein Biotechnology Training Program, a diverse group of graduate students who have unique access to funding from the NIH, dedicated mentors, and opportunities for professional development toward obtaining a job in the biotechnology industry. By participating in this program, I aim to become better acquainted with working in industry, foster community engagement in science, and develop my leadership skills.
