About Mathias Maffei

Currently employed in Carl Zeiss Vision Italy SpA since the second half of 2017, I am usally working in the headquarter located in the surrounds of Varese, but I am used to frequently travel abroad to visit the other sunlens manufacturing plant in China as well as the other VIS plants closeby (Guangdong area). Daily activity is based on management of R&D projects for the definition and implementation of the product innovation strategy and pipeline, looking to every the product features and comparing different approaches (i.e. make or buy analysis). Managing a team of 3 resources, I take care of budget allocation for the different project both in terms of capex and opex. Even more, I have been personally following projects related to environmental sustainability such as RedCert2 and ISCCplus certification of optical materials as well as ISO14067 product carbon footprint. On a global company standpoint, I am usually keeping open the network and collaboration with the VIS business unit HQ located in Germany by sharing common information and backround, as well as mutual support on key activities. I am also representative of the regulatory affairs for the sunlens business, that means mainly taking care of the chemical compliance of products. In this area, the main task is connected to the key regulation currently in force mainly in EU and US to ensure the correct product compliance. In the previous years I have instaead gained know-how on all the tech behind the optical products for sun and ophtalmic applications. I had also the chance to follow up the scale up of some key projects previously developed inside our lab and R&D group; during the frequent flies & stays to the manufacturing site located in Asia I have established a big connection with the production environment and at the same time with really a different culture. My latest school background is technical as industrial chemist but I grew up with an humanistic academic view - interesting mix of perspectives!
