About Mathias Mueller

Geoscientist (Dr. rer. nat.) with a strong field related background. Currently researcher and teacher at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. My research focuses on the proxy preservation of carbonates throughout earth´s history and geothermal energy exploration in Palaeozoic-Mesozoic rocks. The main focus of my applied research is to assess all post depositional (diagenetic) processes possibly influencing reservoir properties in outcrops and at depth. This research involves fieldwork, petrographical methods (thin section analysis, cathodoluminescence, fluid inclusions, scanning electron microscope, microprobe), geochemical methods (carbon, oxygen, strontium, calcium, magnesium, clumped isotopes), and U-Pb dating of carbonate phases to constrain the timing (paragenetic sequence) of precipitation and dissolution, i.e. processes generating or reducing porosity/permeability. My teaching involves sedimentological B.Sc. geology classes (distinguish and characterize sedimentary rocks, logging sections in the field and advanced geological mapping in southern Spain) and advanced M.Sc. classes (applied carbonate diagenesis with focus on geothermal energy research, field classes in the Dolomite Mountains of northern Italy and applied carbonate sedimentology in geothermal reservoir rock analogues in Franconia, Germany).
