About Mathieu Loiseau

Mathieu Loiseau started his love affair with music at a very young age. During his early years, he studied piano, violin, percussions, vibraphone, clarinet and flute before deciding to focus on classical and jazz saxophone. Appointed choir director at 16 and making a living from his music at 17, he won numerous prizes during his high school and college years. In 2003, coming back from traveling the world as a cruise ships musician for five years, he received the “Recherche et création” grant from the “Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec” (Quebec’s art council), which allows him to put together the Moineauphonik Big Band which has since performed with many famous Québec’s popular music stars, among which a tour with Dan Bigras and two “Shows du refuge”. Holder of a PhD in musicology from the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Graz (Austria) and a Master’s degree in instrumental composition from the Université de Montréal, Mathieu has a great passion for composing and sharing the musical knowledge he acquired over the years. Specialized in free collective improvisation techniques and alternative musical notation, he always took pride in studying and excelling in both classical and jazz/pop music. He had the opportunity to compose for symphonic orchestras, big bands and film music as well as conducting small and large musical formations in every style. His sincere passion for knowledge sharing brought him to teach with verve and effectiveness – in private as well as in front of a class – to people of all levels and with any musical background, from preschoolers to graduate students.
