About Matt Ayres

I am the Chief Labour Market Economist with the Ministry of Post Secondary Education and Future Skills. I lead a group responsible for providing labour market information across the BC government and producing B.C.s Labour Market Outlook, a 10-year forecast of the supply and demand for labour in the province. Career Highlights: I have over 30 years' experience working as an economist, econometrician and senior leader, working in a number of areas including labour economics and electricity markets. Over that period, I have worked with government, government agencies, research institutes, consulting groups, universities and in the private sector. As the Chief Executive Officer at Alberta’s Market Surveillance Administrator (MSA) I promoted effective competition and a culture of compliance and accountability in Alberta’s electricity and retail natural gas markets. In my twelve years at the MSA I served as the organizations Chief Economist and as an expert witness in a number of proceedings before the Alberta Utilities Commission. My prior work experience is in energy economics research and as expert consultant in the area of utilities, electricity markets and forensic economics. I have a BA, MA and PhD in economics. In 2013, I was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary, where I have taught undergraduate courses in electricity markets. In 2018 I was appointed an Executive Fellow in the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary
