About Matt L.
Dr. Matthew Leftwich founded Nanomatronix, LLC (NMT) in 2005 as he was completing his graduate studies, and has served four other high-tech start-ups in a variety of leadership and consulting roles. He also serves as a technical consultant to a handful of corporate and government clients. In addition to those commercial R&D roles, he is a Research Professor in Physics and an Adjunct Professor in the Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering Departments at the UofA, where he obtained the majority of his professional degrees, training, and certifications. Most recently Dr. Leftwich accepted an appointment as Director of the Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Program, formerly the Microelectronics-Photonics Graduate Program. His most recent research has been in the areas of developing: i) fiber optic networking (FON) components for harsh environments, ii) hardware anti-tamper technologies, and carbon nanotube synthesis, deposition and alignment for novel applications. Additional research and commercialization collaborations include the development of: i) novel nanocomposite membranes for water purification and desalination; ii) harsh environment power electronics for electric vehicles, novel neural networking processors for autonomous decision making applications, and iv) laboratory-on-a-chip products for studying TBI, etc. Via partnerships with key university research groups, new areas of technology transfer and commercialization activities are emerging at Nanomatronix, along with three strategic business units (Nanomaterials, Microelectronics and Biotechnology). Additional R&D efforts include investigation of biocompatible nanostructured scaffolds for tissue and bone repair, and related, novel nanomaterials production technologies for a wide range of applications. Dr. Leftwich also conducts R&D in the areas of thin-film and thick-film microelectronics design, fabrication, packaging and test per a variety of industry, military and space standards, including significant history developing and testing hybrid optoelectronics for space applications, integrated passives technology in hybrid multi-chip modules (MCM), and solder joint reliability studies per IPC/JEDEC standards.
