About Matt McDaniel

Matt leads NV5’s cultural resources group in the Southeast, overseeing an expert staff of archaeologists and architectural historians. While focused on the Southeast region, Matt and his team have nationwide experience and frequently collaborate with additional NV5 cultural resources staff in the Northeast, Southwest, and Pacific Northwest. Throughout his career, Matt has overseen and completed Section 106 compliance activities for hundreds of projects, from EIS-level mega-projects to small community-based projects, and has experience in the transportation, energy, infrastructure, real estate, education, municipal, and federal workspaces. Beyond compliance, Matt has completed and overseen numerous historic context projects, including type-based statewide surveys, federal contexts, resource-type contexts, and local community contexts and surveys. His past mitigation work has included HABS/HAER documentation, historic contexts and educational publications, and web-based educational tools. Matt and his team continue to develop and utilize cloud- and GIS-based work tools that improve accuracy and efficiency. With the acquisition of Quantum Spatial, NV5’s cultural resources team now has practically limitless geospatial capabilities. During his 21-year career, Matt has evaluated hundreds of historic resources, including various buildings, bridges, railroads, roadways, and historic districts for National Register of Historic Places eligibility, as well as assessed project effects to historic properties. He has extensive nationwide experience applying Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act to transportation projects, including major highway and transit projects, and coordinating cultural resources issues within the framework of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). In previous planning positions, Matt has also advised on historic building restorations and rehabilitation through application of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, historic preservation tax credit projects, National Register nominations, and various historic preservation-related grant applications. Additionally, he has significant experience conducting historical and archival research; developing text for state and nationwide historical context studies; and providing public engagement and community outreach services.
